This pair of Dutch Art Nouveau table lamps began as Gouda ceramic vases, hand-painted in 1918 at Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland. Transformed into lamps by Amitābha Studio, they have custom-cut brass fittings, are newly wired with fabric-wrapped cords, and are paired with new creamy butter-yellow gathered silk lampshades. Plugs will be customized for your country of use. Height includes lampshades. PZH opened in Gouda in 1898 and produced hand-decorated earthenware until the mid-1960s. The factory's record-keeping is why Gouda pottery is collected as closely as it is: the underside of each base carries the Lazarus Gate factory mark, the model number, the name of the decor and the monogram of the painter. On this pair the monogram is read as that of Gerarda Johanna Lugthart. Both bases are waisted, narrow through the middle and flaring at the foot. The decoration runs edge to edge in rust orange, ochre yellow, lavender-blue and soft green over a warm cream ground, under the matte glaze PZH had introduced a few years earlier. The 1918 date sits on the cusp of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Gouda's painters carried the vocabulary of Nieuwe Kunst—the Dutch Art Nouveau, always more austere than the French—well past the movement's close elsewhere. About PZH Gouda. Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland was founded in Gouda in 1898 and grew into the largest of the city's plateel factories, receiving the Koninklijke (Royal) designation in 1930. Its early high-gloss Art Nouveau wares gave way in the 1910s to the matte-glazed polychrome decoration that carried the name of Gouda worldwide. PZH remains the most collected of the Gouda factories. Each lamp is crafted with deep reverence for the original form, using non-invasive methods that preserve the integrity of every antique or vintage vase. They pair these bases with bespoke lampshades, often made fro.
