Oil on canvas signed Yves Bolez and dated 1978, depicting a market or fair scene in a winter landscape. The composition is organised around a large bare tree that occupies the centre of the painting. At its foot unfolds a lively scene featuring characters, merchants, stalls, baskets, a horse, and a tent, while a few houses appear in the distance within a snowy landscape. The work is characteristic of naive painting, with its deliberately simplified perspective, the precision of the small figures, and its narrative and poetic atmosphere. The soft palette, dominated by greens, whites, and pastel tones, contrasts with the colourful touches of the clothing and goods. Signed and dated Bolez 78 in the bottom right. Dimensions with frame: 48 X 56 cm. Dimensions without frame: 32 X 40 cm. Yves Bolez: Yves Bolez is a 20th-century painter primarily associated with naive painting. His biography remains very poorly documented today, and his birth and death dates do not seem to be established in the main artistic databases. His activity is notably attested during the 1970s and early 1980s. His works mainly depict landscapes, villages, rural scenes, and episodes of daily life. They are distinguished by a very detailed composition and the accumulation of small figures and anecdotal elements. The deliberately simplified perspective and meticulous treatment of landscapes place his work within the tradition of European naive art. Several dated works are known, including The Harvest and Village Under the Snow in 1973, as well as a Snowy Landscape. A work titled Return from the Hunt, dated 1980, is also recorded.
