We are delighted to offer for sale this exceptionally rare library desk with a pediment by Gillow, featuring a brass gallery in Burr Amboyna wood, dating from 1852-1857. An exceptionally rare example of a high Victorian library desk made by one of the finest furniture makers in English history, Gillows of Lancaster and London. The desk is fully stamped in the middle drawer with the serial number 617 L, dating from 1852-1857. The wood is Burr Amboyna, a finely coloured knotted wood from the Pterocarpus indicus tree. The original leather top is Regency green with a guilloche border and shows a beautiful patina. The desk has been lightly cleaned, waxed, and polished from top to bottom.
