Modernist anthropomorphic Makonde sculpture from the 1950s. This is a magnificent piece of modernist African art. It is a so-called Makonde sculpture. These unique pieces are made by the Makonde people in Tanzania and Mozambique, known for their intricate designs and bold shapes. Makonde sculptures are unique as they are often very detailed while being abstract, strongly reminiscent of modern art with a brutalist character. This particular sculpture features strange forms and bold twists. Anthropomorphic, one can see faces and human shapes, but in a very abstract and unusual way, sometimes evoking Picasso or Henry Moore. Makonde sculptures are an important part of African culture, made for centuries, with exaggerated features such as elongated limbs and complex patterns serving to convey stories, beliefs, and messages across generations. Overall vintage condition is good with some stains and scratches.
