A rare mid-20th-century card table, presumably of English manufacture and likely of Regency design and taste. This particularly interesting piece of furniture is crafted entirely of painted and varnished metal and features an ingenious system for transforming it into a chessboard. The table features a rectangular upper body, resembling an elegant casket in shape, supported by four long, tapered legs joined at the bottom by thin, arched metal crosspieces. The upper surface, composed of two hinged rectangular elements in ivory-colored painted metal, deserves special attention. The surfaces, deliberately textured and marbled, create a refined contrast with the warm orange-reddish background of the body below. The furniture is incredibly richly decorated, with a succession of minute, neoclassical-style black ornaments arranged along the bands of the upper body and echoed on the legs. The lid is completed with two small, pinecone-shaped metal finials, a further reference to the neoclassical decorative repertoire. The uniqueness of this piece is fully revealed through its intricate opening system. The central top reveals a chessboard painted in traditional black and white, flanked by two hinged side panels decorated with a striking marbled surface imitating malachite. Moving the central section also reveals an interior divided into four compartments, originally intended to hold small objects or gaming accessories. The rare combination of these functions brings the piece closer to the typology of the so-called "games and work tables, " transformable tables that were especially popular in England during the Regency period. Intended for the private rooms of stately homes, these pieces could combine gaming surfaces with storage for sewing and various parlor activities in an extremely compact space. The color scheme of the orange body, the pale upper surface, the black ornamentation, the stark geometric contrast of the chessboard, and the deep green hues of the marbled panel.
