Loving mediterranean landscapes, yves brayer stayed in morocco, spain and italy before settling in the camargue and provence. Like other painters of the interwar period, yves brayer devotes a large part of his work to recording the daily life of the time. While recognizing the pictorial trends of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, certain painters prefer to follow the path traced by vuillard and bonnard, just like the “réalité poétique” group, or that of admirers of the work of courbet, like the “forces nouvelles” movement. Although brayer was always independent, he was on good terms with painters such as francis gruber, founder of "new realism", the french new realism of the 1950s made famous by bernard buffet. After his spanish period, which favored black or dark colors, then the italian period of ocher and terracotta reds, he diversified his palette with greens, pale yellow and several shades of blue. Strongly attracted by mediterranean landscapes, brayer returned to work in spain and italy, but provence and the camargue remained his favorite places until the end of his life.
