Ancient tsonga gate in eroded wood from the late nineteenth century, from the region of kwazulu/natal, a coastal province of south africa. The tsonga are a diverse group of tribes, including the shangaan, thonga, tonga, vandzawu, vatshwa, vakalanga and valoyi. The tsonga are found in south africa, mozambique and zimbabwe. This massive door in a heavy and dense wood is carved with geometric motifs characteristic of this ethnic group. It is in its "juice" and its gray patina, its small defects and shortcomings attest to its antiquity.
