We are delighted to offer for sale a finely carved walnut secretary bookcase of the highest quality, handmade in England, dating from the reign of George II between 1720 and 1740, with the original bevelled glass with mercury backing. This exceptional piece in carved walnut features antique glass over 300 years old, showing a pronounced oxidation effect. The arched door has a bevel that follows the line of the wood. The drop-down top matches the base of the secretary section. The removable central block reveals two large secret compartments for documents. The interior is carefully finished with simplicity and refined details, a symbol of the elegant and fine Georgian furniture of this period. All keys are present and functional, with only one hidden lockable handle missing. The item has been cleaned, waxed, and polished, showing natural signs of use and patina from nearly 300 years. The visible sterling silver candlesticks are not included.
