Folding rocking chair designed by Takeshi Nii, Japan, 1950s. An exceptional rocking chair designed by the Japanese designer Takeshi Nii in the 1950s. Its distinctive, lightweight structure combines leather, metal, and wood, creating a form that is both highly functional and visually striking—embodying the spirit of Japanese modernism and Mid-Century Modern aesthetics. The chair features a folding mechanism, allowing it to take up very little space when collapsed. Its structure rests on a metal frame and wooden rockers that enable the rocking motion. The brown leather is accented with distinctive geometric stitching, while the wooden armrests and rockers lend the piece a refined, warm character. Takeshi Nii’s design is celebrated for its blend of simplicity, functionality, and portability. Its folding form draws inspiration from the design of director's chairs. Other designs by Nii—including the famous NY Chair—are held in major 20th-century design collections. This specific piece retains its original leather upholstery and structure. It shows natural signs of use and patina consistent with its age. There is a visible crack in the leather on the seat, located to the right of the opening, as shown in the photographs. This chair makes a compelling addition to both modern, minimalist interiors and spaces styled in the Mid-Century Modern aesthetic. Thanks to its folding design, it serves as a practical yet stylish piece of furniture—ideal for storage or occasional use.
