This is an original piece produced in 1960’s czechoslovakia and designed by frantisek mezulanik. The purpose of this rather unusual furniture was to be used for displaying flowers or alternatively simply used as a resting bench. The bench consists of three main parts: the frame, the wooden slats and a sliding seat. The frame and legs are made of dark beech wood. This part holds the 12 ash wooden slats stained to a beautiful dark red colour. On the top there is the wooden rectangular display or seat which can slide anywhere across the top of the piece. Frantisek mezulanik is one of the iconic figures of czechoslovakian furniture design of the second part of the 20th century. Mezulanik was designing mainly flexible and adjustable units for bedroom and living rooms in up zavody bucovice. Therefore this piece is slightly different to his typical work however it still represents his signature style. Mezulanik was a great admirer of the scandinavian furniture design and was brilliant working with wood and in introducing expressive pieces whilst using very minimalist language. That is the case for this bench as well; the right angle red horizontal lines work so well with the rectangular form of the dark frame. This piece is in great vintage condition. All the wooden parts have been polished in a recent restoration using original techniques and materials. There is only absolute minimal wear and the whole piece is nearly in its original condition.
