Peter Hvidt, the Danish duo of the Ax chair

Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) forms with Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen one of the great architect-designer duos of modern Danish design. Graduating together from the Copenhagen School of Architecture, they founded their studio in 1944 and signed for three decades for Fritz Hansen and France & Søn furniture of great technical inventiveness. Their Ax chair (1947), the first Danish chair mass-produced in bent beech veneer, is exhibited at MoMA. Their Minerva armchair for France & Søn and Capri table complete a coherent and inventive body of work.
