Mid-Century Scheurich Abstract Modernist Ceramic Vase, West Germany, 1960s

Striking Mid-Century ceramic vase by Scheurich Keramik, West Germany, model 203-32, featuring an exceptionally art-inspired Abstract Modernist Decor. The decoration has a distinctly painterly character, composed of irregular colored forms in blue, yellow, green, and red, defined by expressive black contours and set against a broad matte pale-blue gesture. The vocabulary recalls the biomorphic abstraction of Joan Miró, particularly the spontaneous lines, floating forms, and vivid blocks of color characteristic of his postwar work. There is also an affinity with the broader European abstract tradition associated with Wassily Kandinsky, in which color, line, and form operate independently of figurative representation. The Miró comparison is especially pertinent in the context of ceramics: from the 1940s onward, Miró developed an important body of ceramic work in collaboration with Josep Llorens Artigas, exploring the translation of his graphic and painterly language into clay, glaze, and surface. Measuring 32 cm (12.6 in) high, it has a markedly broader base of approximately 16 cm (6.3 in) tapering to approximately 12 cm (4.7 in) at the upper section. This pronounced taper gives the vase a strong menhir-like, almost monolithic presence, further emphasized by its unusual gritty, stone-like matte glaze. The tactile ground has a natural mineral appearance, contrasting with the selected areas of gloss glaze used for the colored abstract forms. This juxtaposition of rough matte and polished color gives the piece an almost pictorial depth and makes the surface particularly effective when viewed in changing light.
