Tilting gueridon from the Napoléon III period, made in France around 1850-1870. The circular top measures 50 cm in diameter. Height is 69 cm with the top horizontal and 96.5 cm with the top tilted vertically. It is made of blackened wood and painted in polychrome, with gilded fillets and mother-of-pearl inlays. A brass pivot under the top allows for tilting. The painted scene depicts a Venetian canal by moonlight, featuring gondolas, figures, a lantern, and a palace whose windows sparkle thanks to the mother-of-pearl. A gilded ornamental border frames the composition. The turned baluster shaft and the three curved tripod legs are painted black with gold highlights, featuring a small cross motif at the collar. It serves as a side table, tea table, or small table near a sofa or in an entrance. The top can be tilted to display the painting as a decorative panel, or the piece can be stored against a wall to save space. It fits well in a classic interior as well as contrasting with a more contemporary decor. The condition corresponds to its age and use. The painted decoration shows scratches, wear, and abrasions. The gilding is dulled in places. The underside of the top shows areas of missing paint around the wooden support. The tilting mechanism is complete. The piece remains stable and very decorative. Careful shipping. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions.
