We are delighted to offer this very rare pair of library chairs from the Thomas Chippendale period around 1760, with period embroidered upholstery. This is a very rare and highly collectible pair of library chairs, made in the Chippendale style and inspired by his designs, featuring fretwork carvings and ornate legs, all finely executed by a master craftsman. The upholstery is entirely original embroidered, with typical period colours not seen in later reproductions. These chairs are an exceptional example and would be highly prized in any collection. The chairs have been lightly restored, including work on the carvings, with the wood carefully French polished to preserve the original charm and patina. A signed period pair could sell for several hundred thousand, but only originals with solid provenance can be certified. A plaque on one of the chairs indicates Charles Tozer of 25 Brook Street, London, a renowned antique dealer from the early to mid-20th century specialising in 18th-century furniture. Dimensions: Height 97 cm, Width 64 cm, Depth 65 cm. All measurements have been taken at the widest point. The item is available for collection from our warehouses in Wimbledon. Condition: restored, wear consistent with age and use, slight discolouration.
