Antique pine bedside tables – Central Europe, circa 1940 #1

Pair of antique pine bedside tables with square tops and four tapered legs joined by frame stretchers. They originate from Central Europe, from the mid-20th century, where the pine was joined with mortise and tenon joints and painted in lime wash colours. The square-topped kitchen stool is among the most common pieces of furniture in rural Central European interiors: it was used for sitting, climbing to reach a cupboard, and placing the basin. Its height, around fifty centimetres, makes it a bedside table today. The top consists of two or three pine boards joined lengthwise, with slightly rounded edges. The legs are square in section and taper towards the bottom, joined to the apron with mortise and tenon joints. The lower stretchers form a closed frame that adds rigidity to the whole. Details.
