This dressing table (or "powder table") in Louis XV style dates from the second half of the 19th century (Napoleon III period). Handcrafted using traditional cabinetmaking techniques, it combines a structure made of stained solid wood with a veneer of precious wood (mahogany/rosewood) inlaid with floral patterns in oval medallions. Qualities and strengths. Original functionality: The top opens in three reversible sections to reveal a bevelled tilting mirror in the centre and two side compartments upholstered with fabric featuring bird and flower patterns. Authenticity of fittings: The assembly of the drawers, the chiselled bronze lock, and the period slotted screws on the brass hinges attest to an old artisanal manufacturing process from the 19th century. Lines & details: Curved legs with bronze feet at the front, geometric marquetry inlays, and trompe-l'œil on the front. Defects and signs of use (actual condition) The mirror: Shows pronounced pitting (dark oxidation spots of tin) as well as signs of detachment of the mercury/silver nitrate at the bottom and right side. Veneer and structure: Visible chips and veneer losses on the corners and outer edges of the upper sections (notably the left section). Slight wood cracks at the interior corner joints of the main compartment. Marks and wear on the bottom of one of the curved legs. Presence of the original key and a functional lock.
