This striking vintage glass vase was produced in Marinha Grande, Portugal, during the 1960s/1970s, most likely by IVIMA (Nova Fábrica de Vidros da Marinha Grande). Made entirely from transparent amethyst-purple glass, it showcases the rich colors and elegant sculptural forms that defined decorative European glassware during the mid-20th century. Its tall, slender silhouette is characteristic of the period and recalls the refined simplicity of Italian and Scandinavian glass design. The deep purple tone creates a particularly sophisticated presence, changing subtly with the surrounding light and revealing the transparency and depth of the glass. Its restrained shape allows the color and craftsmanship to remain the main focus. Marinha Grande has been at the heart of Portuguese glass production for centuries. The industry developed there in the 18th century, benefiting from the region’s abundant silica-rich sand and pine forests, which historically provided fuel for the glass furnaces. Over time, Marinha Grande became Portugal’s foremost center of glassmaking and developed a renowned tradition of skilled craftsmanship. IVIMA, established in 1955, became one of the country’s leading glass manufacturers during the second half of the 20th century, producing both utilitarian and highly decorative pieces. This vase is preserved in original vintage condition, with no chips or cracks. Its unusual amethyst color, elegant proportions and Portuguese provenance make it a distinctive example of vintage Marinha Grande glass, equally suited to a mid-century modern, Scandinavian or contemporary interior.
