Carpet Kiz Bergama Ancient, Anatolia,105 cm x 162 cm, Wool on Wool, Late 19th, Early 20th

Kiz-bergama wool rug on wool decorated with a medallion and floral motifs, western anatolia, turkey, from the late 19th century or early 20th century. Ins frank colours, raspberry red, tyrian pink and golden bronze, representative register of some anatolian carpets, yurok, kirséhir... Our model features a medallion marked in the center of large stylized flowers on a grey background, the whole with a border flanked by flowers and stylized decorations. The kiz-bergama are entirely wool with a shaved velvet, these regional rugs are usually, jealously preserved in families. They can be recognized by the drawings of large apple blossoms in the two planks closing the field. These drawings are propitiatory fertility motifs as well as the small black and red "sinekli" flies found in the four camel-coloured stilts. The term "kiz" means in turkish, "young girl" and tells us that we are in the presence of a carpet for private use and village production. The many symbols present tell us well, the belonging of this carpet to the bridal carpets, little present on the market. The wool velvet of this rug is shaved and shiny, it is on the anatolians that we find an innovation, the medallion, that the turks borrowed from the persian knots, the medallion appeared in the sixteenth century on these carpets of anatolia, indeed the ottoman empire occupied persia during this period, and the exchanges were numerous. These carpets are "closer" to a type of carpet painted by a venetian painter, lorenzo lotto (1480 - 1557 ) and a german painter hans holbein ( 1497 - 1543 ). Those are the turkish carpets that were placed on tables, balconies and hung on the walls at that time. Turkish carpets (hereké, kayseri) were exported to major european hotels. This carpet has been cleaned professionally and ecologically.
