Large Solid Brass Candlestick - Mythological Dragon/Winged Griffin - Gothic Fantasy/Art Nouveau Style - Circa 1900. DESCRIPTION: A superb and heavy sculptural candlestick in solid brass (over 1 kg), depicting a mythological creature, a dragon or winged griffin. This striking piece is a magnificent example of the Gothic Fantasy style, very fashionable during the Art Nouveau period. The creature stands on its two clawed feet, its finely chiseled wings outstretched, and its long tail curled. Its long, sinuous neck rises elegantly to hold the candle holder and its drip pan in its beak. The quality of the casting is remarkable, from the wing feathers to the scales adorning the holder. This is a major decorative piece, perfect for a cabinet of curiosities, a study, or a characterful library. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or dents. The candlestick has a beautiful original golden patina, which attests to its authenticity. The inside of the holder shows traces of wax and a patina consistent with age, which is normal.
