Louis XVI Style Chimney Bellows in Repoussé Brass with Female Effigy

This Louis XVI style bellows represents a pinnacle of French tinware craftsmanship applied to domestic fireplace accessories. The body, with its characteristic pointed oval shape, is constructed around two brass plates worked in repoussé — the technique of hammering the metal from the reverse to create a relief decoration on the front. The central decoration depicts a female figure in a pastoral setting, rendered with considerable narrative richness in the manner of the Louis XVI period: the flowing draperies, graceful pose, and suggestion of surrounding foliage speak to the refined decorative sensibility of late 18th-century France. The bellows operates thanks to a leather membrane sandwiched between the two brass plates, compressed by the handle and expanded by the pointed nozzle to direct a controlled jet of air into the fire. The characteristic shape — narrow at both ends, widening to a broad oval in the centre — is the classic bellows form established in the 17th century and refined over the following two centuries to the elegant proportions observed here. Dated around 1900, this object was produced at the height of the Louis XVI revival that characterised French decorative arts during the Belle Époque, when a nostalgia for the refined elegance of the Ancien Régime led artisans to reproduce and reinvent the forms and ornaments of the late 18th century with remarkable fidelity. The old patina on the brass, with its dark oxidised reflections, deepens the repoussé decoration and gives the piece a distinguished antique character.
