There is a spatial logic unique to high-backed chairs that distinguishes them from any other seating: it asserts the vertical axis as insistently as it renounces the horizontal axis. This pair of Scandinavian chairs illustrates this logic in its purest form. The footprint — 52 × 52 cm, a precise square — occupies the strict minimum. The height — 111 cm — rises well above the head of the seated occupant, offering protection not only for the lumbar and thoracic vertebrae but also for the cervical vertebrae and neck: the entire back of a person at rest. These are seats designed for the entirety of the spine, for reading, reflection, or conversation sustained over hours, not minutes. The combination of exotic wood and black leather encodes a tension characteristic of Scandinavian design from the late 1960s. The internationally celebrated movement for its rigor and restraint relied, in practice, on imported tropical woods — rosewood, teak, mahogany — to deliver the visual richness expected by the global market. Nordic woods — pine, beech, birch — were beautiful but too pale, too uniform for the decorative appetite of the post-war consumer. Exotic wood brought the grain, depth, and warmth that Scandinavian functionalism could not otherwise achieve without abandoning its formal principles.
