Pair of Neoclassical Bronze Chenets in the Form of Antique Lamps with Handles

These andirons embody the enduring fascination of neoclassical decorative art for the forms of Greco-Roman antiquity. Each is shaped like an antique oil lamp — the hemispherical body and circular base evoking the bronze and terracotta lamps of the classical world — topped with a large oval ring derived from the vocabulary of English Regency and French Empire ironwork, where the ring served as a defining motif of the period. Cast and finished in polished bronze, the pieces have the warm, golden sheen characteristic of mid-20th century English foundries. The oil lamp as a andiron mount is an inspired subject choice. It connects the functional object of the fireplace — itself a source of light and heat — with its ancient ancestor, the portable lamp of classical civilization, thus creating an object with multiple symbolic resonances. The oval ring, floating above the body of the lamp like the handle of an antique vase, introduces a note of elegant linear tension that prevents the composition from resting in mere imitation of the antique, elevating it into the realm of neo-antique design typical of the best post-war English decorative production. Cast in beautifully polished bronze, the surfaces have a warm, golden patina consistent with age and careful maintenance. The iron log bars are a functional length of 42 cm, providing stable support for logs in a standard fireplace opening. This pair would ideally suit a fireplace surround of classical or neoclassical tradition — a Georgian or Regency stone or marble mantel — but would also work effectively as an accent of antique warmth in a more contemporary interior that favours the golden tones of bronze against light stone or white-painted walls.
