An iconic example of Dutch mid-century modern lighting, the Chartres wall sconce was designed by Willem van Oyen for RAAK Amsterdam and first introduced in 1964. Inspired by the celebrated stained-glass windows of Chartres Cathedral in France, the fixture combines hand-fused colored glass fragments with a minimalist metal structure, creating a striking Brutalist composition. Each lamp was individually handcrafted in Van Oyen’s BEVO Glas workshop, resulting in subtle variations that make every piece unique. When illuminated, the textured glass produces a rich interplay of color and light, transforming the sconce into a luminous work of art. A highly collectible design, the Chartres remains one of RAAK’s most sought-after creations. The light can be used with a cable and switch or directly applied to a socket on the wall.
