Majolica plate SARREGUEMINES no. 1174 (late 19th century). Mould number: 1174 (a second number 207, barely visible) Colours: polychrome. Clay: Majolica. Technique: Slipware. Types of marks: 1A (SARREGUEMINES barely visible), 12 (MAJOLICA) Dates: ± 1880-1900 (numbers around 300 appear around 1870, those around 3000 around 1900, according to the website of the Sarreguemines Faience Museum) Description: Head-cutting Mackart woman. Decorated in slight relief with a woman dressed in Renaissance costume. Diameter: 24 cm. This rare decorative plate is in remarkable condition. No chips, cracks, or bubbles. With the original suspension holes and marks from the supports (left during the firing process). Also exists in a version with a male portrait (no. 1175), and both were made in yellow and (rarer) blue. They are part of the collections of the Sarreguemines Faience Museum and are documented in specialised literature; for example, Emile Decker, Sarreguemines in the 19th century: the Utzschneider pottery, 1790-1914 contribution to a history of tastes and styles in the 19th century, thesis, University Nancy 2, 2001, on p. 179.
