Suspended brass lamp by Hans Agnes Markaryd, Sweden, 1960s. With 4 stacked brass shades and an E27 socket. Rewired to EU standards with black textile wire. Good condition. Hans-Agne Jakobsson is a Swedish interior architect and furniture designer, born in Havdhem on the island of Agnes in 1919. He is primarily known for his elegant and modern lamps designed for his own company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, Agnes, in the 1950s and 1960s. Jakobsson passed his carpenter's journeyman exam at the age of 18 and later obtained a degree in architecture in Gothenburg. He worked as an industrial designer at General Motors and assisted Carl Malmsten and Werner West. In 1951, Agnes moved to Småland, where he founded his own lighting company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB. The company gained significant recognition when it moved to new premises in the centre of Markaryd in 1956. Brass lamps became one of the company's iconic models, alongside the iconic chipboard lamps, produced by the subsidiary Ellysett from 1957. The company supplied both private individuals and public spaces such as churches, often involving custom chandeliers in various sizes. The glass shades were blown by the glassworks of Småland. The chandeliers were exported and sold throughout the Nordic region, Germany, Saudi Arabia, France, and Canada. Hans-Agne Agnes's fixtures are often characterised by a generous diffusion of light, frequently soothing and subdued, where each element is meticulously crafted. In a 1953 article, Hans-Agne Agnes himself describes that he "thinks that all parts of the device should arouse the interest of the designer." The soft diffusion of light through the shade, the pull cord's discharge, and the design of the ceiling cup are all crucial details in what would become Jakobsson's unique philosophy of lighting.
