Original lithograph "Checkerboard" by Alexander Calder - Behind the Mirror No. 1

Colour lithograph by Alexander Calder (1898-1976), from the famous issue 156 of the magazine Derrière le Miroir, published by Maeght Éditeur in Paris in February 1966, on the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to Calder at the Galerie Maeght. This abstract composition, titled "Damier", is characteristic of Calder's graphic language: a network of dynamic black lines intersected by geometric shapes in bright yellow, red, and blue. The work is printed on paper and features a text by Calder on the reverse titled "From the Art Students League to the Totems...", an excerpt from his autobiographical memories. He recounts, among other things, his arrival at the Art Students League of New York in 1923 and his early years dedicated to drawing and artistic learning. Issue 156 of Derrière le Miroir is particularly sought after as it is entirely devoted to Alexander Calder and includes texts by Jacques Prévert, Alexander Calder, Meyer Schapiro, and Nicholas Guppy, accompanied by lithographs and reproductions.
