This rare and mysterious Masonic mirror is recognised by its symbolism, typical of the decor of a "lodge" (where its members gather). Each fluted column is topped with an Ionic capital and adorned at its base with a five-pointed star (or pentagram, a symbol of man in the universe). The frieze features an applied stucco decoration inspired by Moorish design and hosts a reversed square in the centre containing the letter G (symbol of the great architect of the universe). I leave it to knowledgeable scholars to provide a more informed description. This trumeau, dating from around 1880, reflects its origin in the desire to make as much use as possible of second-hand objects to conserve the planet's resources. The old is good for the planet!.
