Old bench in iron and pine wood – Central Europe, around 1920

This antique bench made of iron and pine wood is a railway bench from Central Europe, featuring a cold-bent flat iron structure and solid pine slats. It originates from Central Europe, from the first quarter of the 20th century, when urban furniture combined industrial forging with local wood. The platform and promenade bench was made with minimal material: a cold-bent flat iron that forms the legs, armrests, and backrest as a single continuous piece, with three bolted planks on top. The entire structure relies on the geometry of this curve, without gussets or reinforcements. The two flat iron supports curve into an inverted U and end in a sled foot, which distributes the load on the ground and prevents sinking into the earth. The seat is a wide pine board with rounded edges; the backrest consists of two slats of the same profile, bolted to the iron. The wood retains overlapping layers of paint: a dark green base, an intermediate red, and remnants of ochre, all worn down to the bare pine in the seating areas.
