Initially occupying the former Capuchin convent sold after the revolution as national property, the first earthenware factory was installed in 1857 by Moniotte and Granger. A more suitable factory was built in 1858. The hydraulic power was provided by the raging river and the new railway offered ideal transport conditions for the factory. In 1862, the activity was bought by Bourgeois and Page and specialized in fine earthenware. During the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the Salins earthenware factory produced many models of domestic ceramics and decorated services.
