This exceptional two-part cabinet set, designed in 1927 by Josef Frank for the Blitz family's residence in Vienna, represents a rare and historically significant example of interwar Viennese modernism. Commissioned by the Haus & Garten workshops, the project was part of a large-scale private interior comprising sixteen rooms for a prominent Jewish banking family. The set consists of a mirrored bar cabinet and a retractable secretary, both made of solid wood and veneered with matching Cuban mahogany. The deep hue and ribbon grain of the material highlight refined craftsmanship and discreet luxury, while the clean, rational forms reflect Frank's transition to a more functional and human-centred design language. The bar cabinet reveals a bright mirrored interior with glass shelves and integrated storage, while the secretary features a retractable writing surface and a highly organised internal structure. The original brass fittings—including escutcheons, recessed locks, and precision-engineered elements—remain intact, enhancing the authenticity of the set. Documented in Innen-Dekoration (1928) and corresponding to archival documents preserved by the MAK in Vienna, the piece has an exceptional provenance. After the Anschluss, the Blitz residence was confiscated and its contents dispersed via Dorotheum. Remarkably, this set has survived intact and unchanged, making it an important and rare collectible of museum-level significance.
