Oil on cardboard panel, painted in 1926, definitively attributed to Hyacinthe Royet (1862–1926), a French artist from Avignon. Dated the year of his death, this painting is among his last works. The scene depicts the esplanade of the Rocher des Doms in Avignon, bathed in a typically southern light. Beneath the large trees, feminine and childlike figures are subtly suggested, lending the scene a calm and luminous atmosphere. The painting also works beautifully in a child's bedroom, thanks to its visual gentleness. Painting & Materials: Oil on thick cardboard panel, a support widely used by Provençal artists in the 1920s. Warm palette: ochres, golden greens, mauves. Quick and lively brushstrokes. The original signature, located in the lower part of the painting, has disappeared due to a small loss of paint. The attribution to Royet remains strong and has been confirmed by the auctioneer at the Avignon Auction House. Framing: Antique gilt frame with a period patina, in keeping with the painting's tones. Inscriptions on the back: Old inscription: “Hyacinthe Royer – French artist – 1926 – View of the Rocher des Doms” The approximate spelling (“Royer”) is characteristic of period annotations; the correct reading is Royet.
