Rectangular oak side table with a rounded-corner top, tapered legs and shaped stretchers. Designed by Karl-Erik Ekselius in the 1950s, manufactured by JOC, Vetlanda, Sweden. Designed by Karl-Erik Ekselius in the 1950s, the table draws much of its character from the warm presence of oak and a construction that reveals itself particularly when viewed from the side. Beneath the softly rounded top, tapered legs are joined by shaped stretchers that curve towards the centre, transforming the base into a fluid and distinctive composition. This ability to give expressive value even to structural elements reflects Ekselius’s training at Carl Malmsten’s school and his personal interpretation of Swedish modernism. His relationship with JOC of Vetlanda was central to his career: through this manufacturer, his ideas took shape in furniture where craftsmanship and design experimentation went hand in hand. Good condition. It may show signs of age. Please pay attention to the photographs. AG359
