Emil johan olsson, born march 14, 1890, died january 8, 1964, was a swedish painter and member of the modernist group of the twelve. In malmö, he studied in the years 1907-1909 at the bruno hoppe painting school. Olsson then studied at the malmö technical school. In 1909-1912 he studied at the academy of fine arts in stockholm, and in 1916-1917 at the academy in copenhagen, the royal danish academy of fine arts. His artistic education also included study trips. During his studies in france in 1914, he studied mainly with paul cézanne. In copenhagen he studied the early masters hans memling and lucas cranach the elder. After the end of world war i, he returned to paris. In paris, he studied as an apprentice from 1920 to 1921 with the artist and sculptor andré lhote, who was an influential teacher and art critic. In 1922 he also went to italy, and in 1924 to holland and belgium. Emil olsson became one of the artists who contributed to the breakthrough of scandinavian modernism. After many breaks in study in paris, he appeared alongside the returning from germany artist johan johansson and artist svante bergh as one of the leading representatives of modernism in scandinavian painting. A group of contemporary artists, all from skåne, joined forces in 1921 in paris to form the modernist group the twelve. The group exhibited together for ten years, from its debut at the malmö museum in 1924 until the group's disbandment in 1934. Some of the other members are svante bergh, tora vega holmström, emil johansson-thor, anders jönsson, nils möllerberg, and jules schyl. He is represented, inter alia, by at moderna museet in malmö.
