A dark blue wool felt Utrecht Chair designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld for Metz & Co, 1935. This chair is particularly special as it was Rietveld’s very first upholstered chair design. It was executed by Metz & Co, with the wooden frame crafted by Gerard van den Groenekan. Metz & Co produced and sold the chair from 1935 until 1975. This example was purchased in the early 1970s and is upholstered in Kvadrat Divina 793 Navy wool felt – the same fabric that was originally used in the 1970s. It is therefore one of the later Metz & Co productions, making it a true collector’s item. Around 1986, Cassina obtained the exclusive production rights for the Utrecht Chair.
