Mid-Century Modern Wooden Bookends, 1960s, Set of 2

A pair of supports with a geometric, architectural form, made of natural pine wood. Each support has a compact, cuboid shape composed of carefully arranged wooden elements. The composition is broken up by a central, horizontal module with a distinctly stepped profile, which introduces rhythm and relief into the object’s austere geometry. The treatment of the surfaces is particularly interesting. The individual elements have been arranged so that the grain direction and the wood’s natural pattern become an integral part of the composition. The central section, composed of several narrow, profiled slats, creates a distinct textural contrast to the larger, smooth surfaces. The visible structure of the pine and the variation in its tones emphasize the material and artisanal character of the object. The form of the supports reflects the Scandinavian modernist movement, in which a functional object was often treated as a small spatial form. The simplicity of the design is here enriched by a deliberately crafted relief detail, giving the supports a more sculptural character than a purely utilitarian one. Geometric wooden supports of this type are characteristic of European Mid-Century design, where natural wood and simplified form served as the primary means of expression. The use of pine, rather than the more refined wood species typical of some Scandinavian furniture design, gives the pieces a more austere, functional character. At the same time, it is precisely the natural grain of the pine elements that contributes to their decorative appeal. The pair is designed as a cohesive set with a mirrored composition, intended both for the practical purpose of holding a book collection and for display as a standalone decorative piece.
