Michael thonet, the inventor of curved wood furniture, also laid the foundation for their industrial manufacture. Born in 1796 in boppard on the rhine, he set up his own workshop there in 1819. In 1842, the prince of metternich brought him to vienna. In 1849, thonet and his sons founded a company that quickly achieved great international success and rapid expansion. At the time, factories in present-day the czech republic, hungary and russia produced more than 865, 000 curved wooden chairs per year. After michael thonet's death in 1871 in vienna, his sons took over the management of the company. In the 1930s, thonet began designing and technology furniture in steel tube, quickly becoming the world's leading manufacturer. In addition to models designed by architects, the company also produces its own creations. The second world war brought a brutal break, with the confiscation of factories in the east. Since then, the frankenberg plant, located in germany and established in 1889, has been the company's head office and production location. The company is still owned by the thonet family, whose 5th generation currently presides over its destiny. The company produces classic curved wood and steel tube models as well as new models developed in cooperation with renowned architects and designers.
