A.R. Cordemeyer for Gispen Armchair 1431 - new upholstery

A beautiful vintage armchair from Dutch origins, designed by André R. Cordemeyer for Gispen in 1961. The Gispen 1431 is a characteristic example of post-war Dutch design, where clear forms, practical use, and thoughtful construction come together. The chair features an inviting fully upholstered seat shell on a slender metal base. The understated lines and combination of soft upholstery with the slender frame give the design a timeless character. Originally designed as a conference chair, this model feels equally at home in a living room, a reading nook, or a representative workspace. André R. Cordemeyer (1924–1998) was a Dutch industrial designer who worked at Gispen from 1956 to 1976. He was involved in various furniture designs, always seeking a good balance between design, construction, and efficient production. In 1961 he designed multiple seating furniture for Gispen, including the armchairs 1431 and 1432 and the sofas 1704 and 1715. The 1431 thus forms part of a coherent collection of seating furniture from an important period in Dutch design history. This particular example has been recently reupholstered with a beautiful dark blue wool blend from Oniro. The filling has also been fully replaced, making the armchair look great again and providing renewed comfort. The deep blue shade combines stylishly with the metal base and easily complements both warm woods and modern materials.
