William pratt was one of an accomplished group of scottish artists who specialised in painting scenes of country life around the turn of the nineteenth century. He was formally trained at the glasgow school of art and the academic julian in paris. He exhibited at the royal academy, the royal society of artists, the paris salon and the edinburgh exhibition, where he won a medal. Pratt’s paintings are very much appreciated today, and his work can be found in the gallery of modern art in venice, the glasgow art gallery, the city of edinburgh collection and the national museum in northern ireland. This original oil on canvas work by william pratt is signed and dated 1929. It depicts a stone and thatch crofters’ cottage against a stunning backdrop of the scottish highlands. There is a woman sitting on the steps at the entrance of the cottage, wearing a long blue skirt and a red shawl, with a traditional cotton cap on her head. There are half a dozen hens feeding on the ground around her and, to the right of the cottage are two cows, perhaps a mother and calf. There is a large tree to one side of the cottage, and we glimpse the clear aquamarine waters of a river to the left.
