Very old and magnificent color lithograph of butterflies. Illustration of rhopalocera (rhopalocera in Latin), including the galatha. This plate is an original from 1887. It is not a copy but an engraving more than 130 years old! Size: 28 X 21 cm. A detailed and realistic work from a specialized book; with about twenty different species illustrated. The condition of the engraving is good: slightly worn edges, small fold bottom left, slight soiling bottom right. Once framed, this will no longer be visible and will give a beautiful vintage effect. Discount for the purchase of several plates: contact me. The size is ideal for framing. It fits perfectly in a standard frame. The paper used is high quality, cream color. Often colored manually, the colors are bright, sharp and well contrasted: a remarkable work. Note, the spine is without text or image. The author of the work is Dr. E. Hofmann, famous entomologist (1837 - 1892) specialized in insects, especially Lepidoptera. His entomology collections, butterfly are preserved at the Natural History Museum in London and by the National Museum of Natural History in Washington. Rhopalocera (or "day butterflies" in the common sense) are an ancient suborder of Lepidoptera. It is opposed to heterocera (heterocera, or "moths"). Plate No.: 8. Shipping possible. Contact me for a purchase of several plates: discount and single shipping costs. I offer other plates from the same series, to be found in my shop. Do not hesitate to contact me for any questions.
