A low profile meets great comfort without compromise with this T4 sofa. This particular model is a release from the 1970s, designed by Fred Lowen for Tessa Furniture. Curved teak and plywood rails provide the ideal frame to suspend the beautiful leather cushions in a comfortable rope and net hammock. Stunning from every angle and made from the finest materials. This sofa is in excellent original vintage condition, and we are certain you will not find a more sublime representation elsewhere (if you can even find one). The hammock is like new and offers all the support capabilities it had decades ago. This lightly used sofa has clearly been loved and cherished throughout its previous life. Our restoration team has, of course, spent many hours detailing every inch and mitigating most imperfections on the teak frame. Only very slight imperfections, appropriate to its age, remain on the teak. A few small sections of fabric on the non-visible back side of the leather cushions have small areas where the seams have come loose. We have had several sofas from the 1970s over the years, and this T4 model is one of the most comfortable. The bowl style and high back design cradle and support the body up to the head. The bowls allow your bottom to sink in with a slight elevation of your legs. High enough for tall people to have head support, and low enough for short people to have their feet firmly on the ground. This soft black leather is truly the perfectly ideal colour for the style and tone of the teak frames. As elegant and inviting today as it was 4 decades ago, the segmented and tubular ripple upholstery overflows with texture and character. The leather has been carefully cleaned and conditioned. The colour and texture are uniform throughout with no visible discolouration. This set comes from a long-established Australian furniture design company that has won several Australian design awards and has become a well-known name. Founded by Fred Lowen in the late 1960s, Tessa used Australian timbers, engineered woods, and incorporated contemporary design trends into its furniture creations. Tessa was an ambitious company, increasing production to meet demand, displacing small furniture manufacturers, and tapping into export markets. Their peak coincided with Fred Lowen's leadership and a frenzy of production of award-winning designs from the late 1960s to the late 1970s. From its inception, Tessa invested heavily in tools and people to produce goods of superior construction and finish. They also sought the most productive partners to manufacture components beyond their technical or resource capabilities – thus supporting other Australian industries. In 1946, Fred Lowen (FL) formed a partnership with Ernest Rodeck (ER) – FLER. Lowen was supported in this first venture in 1948 when Fred Ward (furniture designer for Myer at the time) designed a wooden dining chair suitable for production at the Fler establishment. An introduction to Lou Newton, the furniture buyer for Myer, completed the picture, and Fler received an opening order of 500 chairs. The Fler SC55 of 1955 was the next major breakthrough with several interstate manufacturers licensed to produce them as well. Tessa was founded by Fred Lowen and his brother in 1968 after the acquisition of Fler. Tessa became the vehicle for some of Lowen's greatest designs that remained in production until June 2019. Lowen retired from Tessa in the mid-1980s.
