1930s Czech Oak Glass Bookcase from a Baťa Factory

A rare oak and glass bookcase or display cabinet dating from the 1930s, originating from a former Baťa factory in Czechoslovakia. The cabinet is a fine example of pre-war Central European craftsmanship, combining a restrained, functionalist form with carefully executed traditional cabinetmaking. Its architectural façade consists of two tall glazed doors divided by horizontal oak rails, creating a beautifully balanced geometric composition. The interior provides three generous storage levels and offers excellent visibility through the glazed front, making the piece suitable as a bookcase, vitrine, collector’s cabinet or display case. Of particular interest is its provenance. The cabinet was sourced from a Baťa factory in former Czechoslovakia. The Baťa company played an important role in the development of Czech industrial culture and became internationally associated with progressive architecture, functionalism and modern approaches to working environments during the interwar period. The cabinet’s understated construction reflects this functional aesthetic: clean proportions, honest materials and an emphasis on practical use rather than excessive ornamentation. Constructed predominantly from oak and wood with glazed double doors. The original character and warm patina of the timber have been carefully preserved. The cabinet has been carefully refurbished and a new lock cylinder has been fitted, complete with a working key. Good vintage condition with minor signs of use and age consistent with its approximately 90-year history.
