Francois gautier (1842-1917) Oil on panel. Representing boats in the mediterranean off marseille. Signed f. Gautier in the lower left edge. Provenance: sale of the painter's studio by his rights holders. Painting from the late 19th century / early 20th century. Dimensions: 33 X 41 cm. Status: well, a few invisible margin tracks once framed. Unframed. François gautier (1842-1917) is a french painter from the provençal school of painting. Born into a wealthy family, françois gautier had the means to paint. He studied at the jesuit college before joining the school of fine arts in marseille and being medaled there. There he rubbed shoulders with the masters emile loubon, jean-baptiste olive and adolphe monticelli. He exhibited at the paris salon from 1866 to 1870, but the war ended there. He was appointed official painter of the navy in 1910. Friend with the patron and collector jules cantini (whose name a museum in marseille bears), he devoted his whole life to painting. His favourite themes are the marines he paints from the coast or directly on his boat as well as the landscapes of provence in the aix countryside towards gardanne where he resides.
