Josef Hurka, Czech modernist lighting
Josef Hurka (1924-2010) is one of the great Czech lighting designers of the second half of the 20th century. A designer at Napako then Drupol, two of the main Czechoslovak lighting manufactures, he signed for three decades desk lamps, floor lamps and sconces where international modernist rigour was adapted to Central European serial production. His articulated lamp in lacquered metal, now cult among collectors, is one of the most reproduced of Czech post-war design.
Josef Hurka lamps for Napako and Drupol, in black or red lacquered metal, remain the designer's most identifiable pieces. Central European vintage lighting to find for those wanting a rare modernist signature, at still very accessible prices.
