Koulango mask from Côte d'Ivoire to the stylization of refined forms. Patina of use, very good state of preservation, slight lack on one of the appendages due to its ritual use. Among Muslim Mandé, the buffalo is a sacrificial animal of great importance. It is illustrated in this mask with a scarified human face. The Dô society to which he belongs and the clan leaders organize the sacrifices at the end of Ramadan. This African buffalo mask is called Singinkuru-Ayna. It is associated with the image of "The Old Muslim" Horingyo. Some Islamic ethnic groups, such as the Ligbi, close to Ghana, cousins of the Senoufo, have retained some animist traditions through the Dô society which is perhaps a survival of the Poro practiced among the Senoufo. The inner face hints at a beautiful work with the herminette and obvious traces of portage. Dating: c. 1950 - 1960. Dimensions: 44 cm. Materials: wood. Provenance: ex private collection, France. Provided with certificate of origin from an independent expert.
