His family was in the wine business, but young robert became an apprentice at oakley's, a brass finisher company, which was involved in making magic lanterns. He invented an automatic regulator for high-pressure oxygen cylinders, a necessity for lantern illuminators, and in 1882 established his own company, r.r. Beard ltd., to manufacture it. His next most successful invention was the eclipse slide holder, which made the magic lantern work easier and gave the screen a primitive mix. Beard had a practical interest in cinematography from his first appearance in england. In 1946, his son percy remembers being taken to see the 1896 lumière cinematograph show at regent street polytechnic. Very soon after, the beard cinematograph (with the intermittent maltese cross) appeared on the market, and beard projectors were produced until the following century. The company eventually specialized in the manufacture of lighting for the film industry and continues to specialize under the name photon beard (following the merger with photon lighting ltd in 1990), producing energy-efficient lighting for the film and television industries. Stephen herbert (revised september 2008).
