Tsogho Mask / Vuvi Gabon

Authentic tsogho / vouvi mask from gabon. The use of kaolin in large quantities is quite common among sculptors in gabon. Indeed, they are found on many masks in the fang, punu, kwele, etc. On the other hand, there is a fairly geometric style with simplified strokes. The flat face with simplified and detailed features allows this african mask to be attributed to the tsogho vuvi. The mask is at the centre of the secret societies (mwiri, okukwe and bwiti) that are responsible for tribal affairs (both social and religious) and the maintenance of public order. Dating: c. 1950.
