Mangiarotti black marble dining table for captain - 1970s Black marble dining table, Angelo Mangiarotti, Skipper, Italy, 1970s. Original and postmodern marble-labelled table The tray is supported by two conical columns. Highly regarded for his sought-after and controlled approach to materials, Italian architect, sculptor and designer Angelo Mangiarotti was born in Milan in 1921. After graduating from Politecnico di Milano in 1948, he moved to the United States in 1953. There he held a visiting professorship at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and befriended famous architects, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), Walter Gropius (1883-1969), Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) and Konrad Wachsmann (1901-1980), all of whom greatly influenced his work. During his career, Mangiarotti has won numerous awards in design and architecture, such as the Domus Formica Award (1956), the European Metallic Construction Prize (1979), a Compasso d'Oro (1994), and the Marble Architecture Prize (1994, 2007). His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world, including the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and the Ma Gallery in Tokyo.
