A treasure trove of african art, this authentic kwélé mask is one of the most contemporary creations. In the typology of the kwélé masks, according to the two researchers, the so-called "wrapping horns" - to which our mask is attached - identified as emblems of the initiation society of the beete. Bringing together notables and warriors, the beete "was tasked with mobilizing the magical forces of the community to resolve crisis situations, ward off danger or promote the collective life of the village" (perrois, 2003: 108). This emblematic mask evokes both the tutelary ancestor, through the stylized face, and a forest spirit, kuk, in the reinterpretation of the horns of large antelopes. Dating: c. 1960. Dimensions: 45 cm. Materials: wood. Provenance: ex private collection, france. Provided with a certificate of provenance from an independent expert.
