Description
Born in Bordeaux in 1933, Claude Bellan began painting in 1952. The reality of painting he meets at Velasquez, Poussin, Cézanne, Matisse, Bacon, and some artists revealed after the war such as Bores, Estève and Boissonnet. In 1957, he moved to Paris and met Herta Lebk, also a painter. in the 1950s, when abstraction triumphed, he became interested in landscape, later, when pop art took hold, he worked on the self-portrait, and when the time came for installations and conceptual work he clung to the canvas, to figuration, convinced that he had a chance to achieve what he was looking for. a form of lag and constant questioning. Claude Bellan expresses himself through the traditional techniques of his art but the questions he asks have the urgency and acuity of the present time, he gives to see, to think, walking off the beaten track and thus forcing the viewer to define himself in relation to him, and here he joins with force and relevance the great debates that underlie the current art.
