Antique tapestry

Tapestry of the Gobelins house. Tapestry reproduction of the 70s/80s: goblins. Good condition. Reproduction medieval motif. Beautiful decorative object. This tapestry presents three stages of wool work. On the right, a seated young girl holds a sheep against her that she is about to shear. Her dress, although it falls back in generous folds, is indeed that of a peasant woman. A comb is hung on her belt while she holds in one hand forces, the upper part of which can be seen. In the center, a young standing man balls the wool of a skein placed on a reel, or drum. Its elegant purple testifies to its noble condition. On his belt, white, wide and draped, hang various tools specific to the shepherd: one recognizes, among others, in the center, a knife "sharp". Both have with them the accessory par excellence of the shepherd, the houlette, a kind of long wooden rod terminated by a small shovel. On the left, a young girl sits on her lap a ribbon strainer, a small portable loom used by women to make stripes and ribbons. Three shuttles hang from her belt while she holds a fourth in her hand. She wears a thin shirt and a wide skirt covered with a loose dress whose folds cascade back. This tapestry is part of a series of three pieces, commonly called La tapisure de La Noble Pastorale: "pastorale" because it describes various activities of shepherds and shepherdesses, and "noble" because it mainly features young lords and noble ladies who play shepherds. These "sheepfolds" were very fashionable at the end of the Middle Ages throughout Europe, because they were both eminently decorative and less expensive to make than the large historiated suites.
